- January 10th - Anthony Eden resigned; Harold Macmillan is the new Prime

- March 25th - Treaty of Rome signed by six countries France, West Germany,
Italy, Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg, setting up the Common Market (EEC)

- July - Harold Macmillan made his speech declaring 'that most of
our people have never had it so good' but still there were 2,000

- August 30th - Malaya attained independence 170 years of
British rule ended
- October 4th - The Soviet Union launched Sputnik I and II, The world's first
artificial space satellites which caused great consternation to the Americans
because of the military implications
- October - The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visit Washington USA
- December 4th - 88 people died and over a 100 were seriously
injured in the Lewisham train disaster. Two trains collided
in fog under a fly over bridge which collapsed onto the coaches of the 4.56
from Cannon Street. This was the third worst in British railway history
- Bill Haley and the Comets were the biggest entertainment
hits when they visited the Britain
- Laurence Olivier portrayed Archie Rice in the John Osborne film

- Britain detonated its first H-Bomb on Christmas Island
- A serious fire at Windscale Nuclear Plant (Sellafield), Cumbria - which
contaminated local milk supplies
- Ghana (formerly the Gold Coast) becomes independent
