- April 12th - The Russians announced that Major Yuri Gagarin
had made the first manned space flight. He completed an orbit
of the earth in 89.1 minutes at a height of upto 190 miles
- April 17th - US aided , anti Castro exiles invaded Cuba
at the Bay of Pigs
- June 27th - Dr Arthur Michael Ramsey was installed as
the 100th Archbishop of Cantebury
- July 1st - Lady Diana Spencer, the future Princess of
Wales was born
- August 20th - Construction of the Berlin Wall began, to
halt the flow of refugees to the West
- December 19th - Indian troops retook Goa, ending 400 years
of Portuguese rule
- The 'Pill' became available under the NHS
- Canon John Collins became chairman of CND (Campaign
for Nuclear Disarmement)
- The 'Establishment came under the satirical eyes of Peter Cook,
Dudley Moore, Johnathan Miller and Alan Bennett in the review 'Beyond
the Fringe' and set off a whole satire boom
- President Lumumba killed in the Congo, Katanga secession
ends in 1962 after UN intervention
- Secretary of United Nations, Dag Hammarskjöld was
killed in an air crash, U Thant succeeds him
- South Africa withdraws from the Commonwealth
- Us breaks off diplomatic relations with Cuba
- Alan Shepard makes the first US manned space flight
- Tanganyika becomes independent as Tanzania
- Multi racial "Freedom Riders" attacked in US
