- February 20th - Astronaut John Glenn became the first
American to orbit the earth
- April 11th - Adolph Eichmann, the ex Nazi leader, was
put on trial in Jerusalem. He had been caught by Israeli agents in Argentina
during 1960. He was hanged.
- May 25th - Sir Basil Spence's new cathedral was consecrated
in Coventry to replace the original which was badly bombed
during the war
- August 5th - US film star Marilyn Monroe, 36, died of
a drug overdose of sleeping pills. Speculation as to what really happened
that night still continues.
- October 28th - Nuclear war was averted as the Cuban missile
crisis ended. President John F Kennedy and Nikita
Krushchev agreed to reduce nuclear arsenals
- November 7th - South African black leader Nelson Mandela
was sent to jail on Robin Island, for inciting a National strike and his initial
sentence was for 5 years
- The satirical magazine Private Eye and the BBC tv show That Was
the Week that Was (TW3) was launched. Scandals about public figures were
unearthed and mocked in an increasingly satirical society
- A huge post war building programme started in London with a slum clearance
policy and rehousing families in Tower blocks
- Algeria becomes independent
- Uganda becomes independent
June 2nd
- Consecration of Coventry Cathedral. Royal Visit. Four pages plus a double

- Picture of Lieutenant - Commader Malcolm Scott after his tri-orbital flight

- Students riot during anti-facist demonstartion against OAS
