- February 7th - The Beatles ("She loves you"
and "I wanna hold your hand")arrived in New York for a tour
of the US. 'Beatlemania' swept the world
- March 15th - Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
were married in Montreal
- March 18th - United Nations force was sent to Cyprus to
restore peace
- April - A new TV channel BBC 2 started, with an emphasis
on culture, science and the arts
- April 15th - Ronald Arthur Biggs, a 34 year old carpenter
from Redhill, Surrey was found guilty of the Great
Train Robbery along with 11 others
- June - Ian Smith threatened a unilateral declaration of
independence for Rhodesia in response to Britains insistence
on full rights for the black majority
- June 14th - Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in South
Africa on charges of treason
- August 7th - US action against North Vietnam
increased after an attack on a US destroyer
- October 14th - Nikita Krushchev was deposed in the USSR
by Leonid Brezhnev and Kosygin
- October - Labour wins the general Election, back in power
with a very small majority, Harold Wilson is Prime Minister
- November 3rd - 36th President Lyndon Johnson was re-elected
to office in the USA
- Mary Quant became the fashion Guru of the time. London
took over from Paris as the centre of the fashion scene
- Dr Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace
Prize
- Nehru who had been the first Prime Minister of India
in 1947 died
- In Jerusalem, the Palestinian Liberation Organisation
(PLO) was established
- Nyasaland becomes independent as Malawi
- Northern Rhodesia becomes independent as Zambia
- Cole Porter dies, aged 71
- Cassius Clay defeated Sonny Liston to
become World haevyweight boxing champion
