- February 26th - The US launched a major attack on Viet Cong
bases in Vietnam
- March - The Torrey Canyon oil tanker ran aground on the Seven
Stones reef, Cornwall and 13,000 tons of oil contaminated
80 miles of coast line. The tanker was bombed by the RAF
to burn the oil
- May 28th - Francis Chichester completed his solo yacht
voyage around the world in a 50 foot yacht Gipsy Moth IV. His 28,500
mile trip had taken him around Cape Horn. He was knighted
by the Queen at Greenwich with Sir Francis Drake's sword
- Canada Centenary
- June 10th - Israel was victorious in a six-day
war against Egypt, Syria and Jordan
- July 14th - A Bill was passed in the Commons legalising abortion
in Britain
- September 20th - The passenger liner Queen Elizabeth II was launched
at John Browns shipyard on the Clyde. The
last of the great liners to be built here.
- December 3rd - The first heart plant operation was performed
in South Africa by Christiaan Barnard
- December 11th - A prototype of the world's first supersonic airliner
Concorde, was revealed at Toulouse, France
- Twiggy hit the world of fashion
- The Beatles released Sergeant Pepper and Procol
Harum a Whiter Shade of Pale
- Desmond Morris published his book about human aggressive
behaviour The Naked Ape
- Hippies gathered at Woburn for a festival
of flowers
- Donald Campbell was killed on Coniston Water
in the English lake district while attempting the world water speed record
in Bluebird
