Cheering the post-war gloom was the marriage of the Heir-Presumptive
Princess Elizabeth to the former Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten and now
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Princess Elizabeth, the elder daughter of the King and Queen, was born
on April 21st 1926 when her parents were Duke and Duchess of York. Prince
Philip, born on June 10th 1921, in Corfu, was the son of the late Prince
Andrew of Greece and his wife, a sister of Lord Mountbatten.
To commemorate the marriage on November 20th 1947 the ILN published its
‘Royal Wedding Number’ on November 29th.

(Appendix List No. 134). In the magazine
we see the couple drawn to Westminster Abbey in the Irish State Coach;
the actual marriage ceremony; the bridal cortege and royal procession;
the drive back to Buckingham Palace in the Glass Coach; the Royal Family
wedding groups and the honeymoon journey to Broadlands Park, Hampshire.
Of course, all the bridal gifts are shown and we have full biographies
of the couple.
The coloured cover by Cyrus Cuneo shows two miniature portraits of the
couple in gold frames linked together by a female figure dressed in dark
pink with a blue cloak, a modern interpretation of the Godess of Marriage.
Garlands of flowers and confetti fall towards a picture of Westminster
Abbey.
This is issue number 5667, vol. 221, pages 589-620, measuring 37 x 26
cm and priced at three shillings.
