On July 29, 1981, 700 million TV viewers worldwide watched the Prince
of Wales marry Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Lady Diana, the daughter of the Earl of Spencer and the Honourable Mrs.
Shand Kidd, was born on July 1, 1961 at Park House on the Sandringharn
estate in Norfolk. Though the couple may have met as small children the
first occasion recalled by Lady Diana was in a ploughed field in November
1977 when Prince Charles was a guest at the Spencer family home at Althorp
in Northamptonshire.
'A Royal Wedding' special number (the eleventh in the series of record
numbers) was published in early July
(Appendix List No. 177) and follows the style of the
Silver Jubilee Record in its series of separate chapters interspersed
with colour plates. The chapters are Royal Wedding by Sir Arthur Bryant;
the marriage and the monarchy by Robert Lacey; the Prince of Wales by
Margaret Laing; Lady Diana Spencer; Wedding Day; St. Paul’s Cathedral;
the status of Queen Consort by Michael L. Nash and a memoir of former
marriages by James Munson.
The cover shows the official engagement photograph in a square frame against
a gold background with a decoration in blue of stylized orange blossoms.
It has 74 pages measures 30 x 23 cm and was priced at two pounds fifty
pence.
