With a view to strengthening the ties of friendship between England
and Austria, in the December of 1911 the Lord Mayor of London, Alderman
Sir T. Vezey Strong made a state visit to Vienna as the guest of the
Burgomaster Dr. Josef Neumayer. He was also received in audience by
the Emperor Franz Joseph.
A substantial section of a special number issued on December 9th (Appendix
list no. 61) is devoted to the actual visit as well as extolling the
beauties of Vienna, the holiday resorts of Semmering and Schneeberg
and the industries connected with Austria’s capital city (art,
carpentry, lamps and metalware and the tobacco monopoly).
The only external evidence of the magazine being an extraordinary number
are the blocked words Special Vienna Number’ flanked by the stylized
wings of the Austrian two-headed eagle above the normal title frame
and advertising front. This issue, number 3790, vol. 139 (pages 961-1024),
measures 30 x 42 cm and cost sixpence.
