"The Great Eastern" as reported by The Illustrated London News

The Great Eastern was one of the most remarkable ships of the Victorian age —
and a favourite subject in the Illustrated London News.

Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and launched in 1858, she was at that time the largest ship ever built:
nearly 700 feet long, with both paddle wheels and a screw propeller.
The ILN covered her construction in detail, from the laying of her keel on the Thames to the enormous challenges of her sideways launch.

Although she was not a commercial success as a passenger liner, the Great Eastern made history by laying the
first successful transatlantic telegraph cable in 1866 — a feat that revolutionised global communications.
