Dr Johnson's Club (Literary Club)
Founded 1746 by Dr. Samuel Johnson and Sir Joshua Reynolds
The membership was very exclusive and extended to only a dozen or so.
Garrick, Goldsmith, Burke, Hawkins, Boswell were members.
Early meetings were held at the Turks Head in Soho, London
The Grecian Club (could be this one)
Just as White's was distinguished for it's gallantry and Wills's for it's poetry,
The Grecian Club was noted for it's scholarship
The Club name was taken from a coffee-house of the same name which had operated close to
The Temple. The shop had been a regular haunt of freethinkers including
“Sir Isaac Newton, Sir Hans Sloane and other fellows of the Royal Society”.
