Eva Perón, known affectionately as Evita, was Argentina’s First Lady from 1946 until her death in 1952.
Born in rural poverty in 1919, she moved to Buenos Aires as a teenager to become an actress.
Her life changed when she met and married Juan Perón, a military officer who became president.
As First Lady, Eva championed Argentina’s poor and working class, campaigned for women’s suffrage (won in 1947),
and founded both a powerful women’s political party and a massive charitable foundation that built hospitals, schools, and homes.
Beloved by the people but controversial among elites, her influence was unmatched.
Diagnosed with cancer, she died at just 33, triggering national mourning.
Her dramatic life and death later inspired the musical Evita, securing her place as a legend of 20th-century politics.

Eva Perón was never officially Vice President of Argentina, although she came close.
In 1951, during a mass rally of workers, she was formally nominated as Vice President alongside her husband Juan Perón,
who was seeking re-election.
The announcement sparked massive support — especially from the working class — but also fierce opposition from the military and political establishment.
Due to her rapidly declining health from cervical cancer and the intense political pressure,
she declined the nomination on August 31, 1951, in a dramatic radio address, often referred to as her "Renunciamiento" (renunciation) speech.
