- October - BOAC commenced the first transatlantic Jet service using
Comet 4 aircraft.
- October - Mike Hawthorn became the first UK World Champion in Formula
1 racing, Stirling Moss was runner up
- October 28th - Cardinal Roncalli elected Pope with
the title John XXIII
- December 5th - Britains first stretch of motorway, the 8 mile Preston
bypass, opened
- December 21st - General de Gaulle elected first President of the
fifth French Republic
- The first parking meters were introduced in London and first 'no parking'
yellow lines started appearing on roads
- STD or subscriber trunk dialling was introduced on Britains telephone system
- Britain announced the introduction of a new form of travel The Hovercraft
- The first signs of the awful consequences of the Thalidomide drug,
on babies, were being recognised in Germany
- The Lord Chamberlain of Britain lifted the ban on the portrayal
of homosexuality on the stage
- Parliament saw the installation of the first Life Peers, including 14 women
- John Betjeman's Collected Poems had a huge readership

- Khrushchev succeeds Bulganin as Politburo chairman in the
USSR
- JK Galbraith's The Affluent Society was published
- Boris Pasternak's Dr Zhivago was published
