• June 1st - Political crisis in France over Nationalist rebellion in Algeria
• October - BOAC commenced the first transatlantic Jet service using Comet 4 aircraft.
• October - Mike Hawthorn became the first UK World Champion in Formula 1 racing, Stirling Moss was runner up
• October 28th - Cardinal Roncalli elected Pope with the title John XXIII
• December 5th - Britains first stretch of motorway, the 8 mile Preston bypass, opened
• December 21st - General de Gaulle elected first President of the fifth French Republic
• The first parking meters were introduced in London and first 'no parking' yellow lines started appearing on roads
• STD or subscriber trunk dialling was introduced on Britains telephone system
• Britain announced the introduction of a new form of travel The Hovercraft
• The first signs of the awful consequences of the Thalidomide drug, on babies, were being recognised in Germany
• The Lord Chamberlain of Britain lifted the ban on the portrayal of homosexuality on the stage
• Parliament saw the installation of the first Life Peers, including 14 women
• John Betjeman's Collected Poems had a huge readership appeal
• Khrushchev succeeds Bulganin as Politburo chairman in the USSR
• JK Galbraith's The Affluent Society was published
• Boris Pasternak's Dr Zhivago was published
